WHO WE ARE
My name is Frances Whitmore, and fifteen years ago I did something that scared me more than anything I had ever done before. I opened a boutique.
Not because I had a business degree or a detailed plan. But because I had spent decades walking into stores and leaving empty-handed, frustrated by clothing that felt like it was made for someone else entirely. Someone younger, someone with different priorities, someone who hadn't yet figured out exactly who she was.
I had figured out who I was. I just couldn't find anything that reflected it.
HOW IT BEGAN
I met Vivian at a farmers market on a Saturday morning in Asheville, the way you meet people in this city — slowly, over coffee, with no particular agenda. We were both in our fifties, both had spent our careers doing things for other people, and both had arrived at the same quiet realization: we wanted to do something that was entirely our own.
We started talking about clothing that afternoon. About how hard it was to find pieces that felt elegant without being stiff, comfortable without being shapeless, beautiful without trying too hard. About how the women we knew — smart, lived-in, wonderfully themselves — deserved so much better than what the market was offering them.
By the time we finished our second cup of coffee, the idea was already alive.
WHAT WE BUILT
We opened The Magnolia Ladies in the shadow of Biltmore, in a city that has always understood that beauty and quiet go hand in hand. Asheville drew us in the same way it draws so many women our age — the mountains, the art, the sense that life here moves at a pace that allows you to actually notice things.
We chose the name because the magnolia has always felt like the right symbol to us. It blooms late. It is not in a hurry. It is one of the most beautiful things in nature, and it only gets more so with time.
From the very first day, we made one promise to ourselves and to every woman who walked through our door. We would only carry pieces we would wear ourselves. Not pieces that looked good on a hanger. Not pieces that photographed well. Pieces that felt right on a real body, living a real life.
Every blouse, every dress, every set in our collection has had to answer one question before we brought it in: would we choose this for a dear friend?
If the answer was anything less than yes, it stayed behind.
WHO WE SHOP FOR
We shop for the woman who knows exactly what she likes and is tired of being told she should want something different. The woman who has earned the right to comfort and elegance at the same time, and refuses to choose between them.
She is in her sixties, or close to it. She has lived a full life and it shows in the best possible way — in the way she carries herself, in the way she dresses, in the way she walks into a room without needing to announce herself.
She is who we design every buying decision around. She is who we think about when we are up late going through new collections. She is, in many ways, us.
WHERE WE ARE NOW
Fifteen years later, Vivian and I still make every decision together. We still ask the same question before every piece we bring in. And we still believe, just as firmly as we did over that first cup of coffee at the farmers market, that a woman in her sixties deserves clothing that feels like it was made exactly for her.
Because it was.
